When We Prepared Pallets of Sandbags

It started with a pile of sand in a parking lot.

This summer, with hurricane season ahead and the flooding that can come with it, we made a call: get the sandbags ready now. Not when a storm had a name. Not when the forecast turned. Now, while the sky was blue and there was no reason to hurry.

When the work got done

The crew set up the bagger and got to it. A skid steer scooped sand from the pile and dumped it into the hopper. The machine filled each bright orange bag. One person caught it, another ran it through the stitcher to sew it shut, and another stacked it on a pallet.

Then they did it again. And again. Bag after bag, pallet after pallet, in the summer heat, until sandbags sat in rows across the lot.

It wasn’t glamorous work. Nobody was watching, and there was no emergency pushing anyone along. It was just a crew doing a job that might matter later.

When we waited

After that, the only thing left to do was watch the weather.

Every week of the season, we were ready for the call. If the water came up, we knew exactly where the bags were and how fast we could get them moving. That part was already handled.

And the call never came. No hurricane. No flood. The pallets sat exactly where we left them, the bags hadn’t moved an inch.

When nothing happened

Here is the part worth telling. When nothing happened, nobody on the crew called it a waste.

They knew what the other version of this story looks like. It’s the one where the water is already rising and someone is just now looking for sand, bags, and a crew with a free afternoon. We never had to live that one. We got to spend the season knowing that if it went bad, we were covered.

That is a good way to get through a storm season, even one where the storms stay away.

When they get used

Those Sandbags are not going anywhere. A sandbag doesn’t care what it was filled for. The next heavy rain, the next jobsite with a runoff problem, the next customer who needs a barrier in a hurry, they will be sitting there stacked and ready.
